nouns & article..22/12/11

Today, we learned about nouns and article..The group that present about this is Farahaireen's group. The other group members are Hefa, Pony and  Salina.
   
        nouns - Names of people, places, things and animals
            abstract, common, collective and proper 

Common noun is noun of all things with the same kind or class
      Proper noun is name of  one particular person or things

Abstract nouns is things we can only think of  and feel. It can be formed from adjectives or from common nouns or from verbs.

eg : adjectives - brave       abstract - braveness
        common noun - thief   abstract - theft
        verb - live                     abstract - life

Collective nouns is the name of a number(or collection) of person or things considered as one

eg :
family - having same parents
       band - a group of musicians

actually, when I surf the internet, there are other nouns such as countable and uncountable, compound nouns and many more. you can check about it at http://www.englishclub.com/grammar/nouns.htm.

 Then, miss zu told us other nouns which is possessive nouns
          possessive nouns - it belongs to someone
          eg : the witness's story is so dramatic
          we do not talked about waitress but story.

The article are a ,an & the 
a & an - used before singular countable nouns -  a table, an honest
the      -  used before singular and plural nouns and before countable and uncountable nouns - 
               the star, the moon
We often use a or an :


 in descriptions
Eg :   She is an interesting person.
         He is got a loud voice.

when we say what something is, or what somebody’s job is
Eg :  This is a return ticket.
        I am an engineer.

We use an before a vowel sound ( a, e, i, o, u)
  Eg :   An address
           An egg
           An idea

 We choose a or an because of pronounciation, not spelling
 Eg :   an hour ( h is silent, so hour is like our )
          a university (  pronounced ‘ you-niversity’ )

We use a before a consonant sound ( b, c, d, g, j, m)
Eg :   A book
        A coat
        A letter
